After a few years of low white cell, red cell and platelet counts, my fathers last blood work showed continuing low platelets and red cells but abnormally high white cell count. I have a feeling this might mean he has finally progressed to AML. Is this an accurate concern? Or can it man something else?
I'd appreciate any feedback.
Thanks,
Kim

Kim,
It may be that your father has progressed to AML, but his white cells may be elevated in response to some sort of infection. An infection won't always produce a fever, chills, etc. like a cold or flu but might still respond to antibiotics. Has he or have you asked the doctor how he plans to respond to this change?

Thanks for your reply Ruth. My dad's dr sent him a note saying she was concerned about the white cell count and set up some tests for Monday. So we will see..........

For what its worth -- our WBC spiked after starting Dacogen Round #1 on August 9, they went up to 22.2 but are sadly down to 0.9 September 20.

Hi Hope this finds you well. Just wanted you to know that although I am not a doctor, my husband has been dealing with the same kinds of numbers for the past year. He just keeps going on with Vidaza and we deal with the low platelets with transfusion. How high are his white counts if you don't mind sharing? My husbands have been between 14 and 21. Wishing you a little peace of mind and hoping to give you a little encouragement. So far no transformation to AML and no infections.
Feel free to ask any questions that you have.
sincerely, Rose
