The importance of fresh blood

Hi all,
Here is an abstract about fresh blood when we get transfusions.

I find this a good article, and not so surprising. Those that have been following my fathers journey, will remember back in the spring of O8, {northern hemisphere} he had been recording the "use by dates" on the units of blood. He had noticed the fresher the blood, the longer between each transfusion he could go. When the leukemia first dtarted getting bad, he had two units that were only 2 days old. He had gotten the longest run out of those.

I definitely subscribe to this theory. Unfortunately, it does need to be processed so the recipient does not get sick. I would think that also takes something out of it.
