How long until blood type changes to donors ?

I had transplant 7 mo. ago and everything has changed over except blood type. I am O neg. and I think donor is type A. My hmg. keeps dropping to 7 or below and I have to have transfusions about every 2 weeks. Dr doesn't give much info, he just keeps saying that it will change.
I am very thankful for this site where we can get answers from people who have been through all the things we are going through.

Hi Vicki!

I had my BMT on June 7th and the last time we had checked it I was about 90% donor. My hemo has been stable the whole time though. My doctor said that everyone is different and he's seen it change in as little as 3 months up to as long as 9 or 10 months. Hope your hemo stays up and your blood changes soon!

Thanks Summer

I am glad you are doing so good. I am going to try to get more info from my Dr at next visit. If blood type would change, I would feel great.

Bloodtype change

Hi Vicki,

I had my BMT in Dec 2012, was blood transfusion dependent until Aug 2013, until then I still showed my original blood type as O neg, rather than my donor B neg. All of the sudden I no longer needed transfusions and at my one year mark in Dec 2013 we did blood type testing and I am B neg.

Right now your blood tests are mostly showing the borrowed blood, it will show the type O, but eventually once you start making your own, it will change. For me I took for ever, but better late than never!

All the best!

Tii, 37, MDS (BMT sister donor 12/12)

Thanks Tii,

It helps to know that others have gone thru this. I will be so happy when my blood type changes and I have some energy again.

Evan went from O+ to his donor's A+ four months post BMT. Hang in there, the switch will come!

Hi Vicki, hang in there! I took about 6 months to change over & start making red cells. The dr said I had pure red cell aplasia and it was totally ok. He said it can take even longer to change over. Eventually my hgb started holding, then ever so gradually increasing to normal levels. How are your other levels?

Dr said all of my other counts are good. wbc-2.5, rbc-2.60,hgb 7.6 ( dropped to 6 one week later ) platelet 83. BMB in November showed all donor. Just waiting on blood type to change over.

Vicki idk if this helps but we were told counts drop before (while?) blood was changing over.

Hi Vicki,

I had transplant 4,5 years ago.
I had waited 11 months for changing of blood type and I had taken two package blood every 15-20 days.Suddenly my hemo counts had increased and I no longer needed transfusions.

Thanks Heather & Tserdogon

Thanks for the info, it helps to know what others went thru. I am taking a lot of meds, I don't know if that slows the blood type change over. I am taking-
fluconazole,
penicillin V potassium,
hydrocodone,
potassium chloride,
methylprednisolone,
citalopram,
doxepin,
cyclosporine,
pantoprazole,
magnesium chloride,
lorazepam,
amlodipine,
acyclovir,
atenolol.

I had a trans for PNH in Dec 2011. The only blood that I ever got was that of my donor, (if I rem corr). or the universal donor type. I do not rem my doc or med staff informing me of a spec time frame for blood type switch. I will ask my doc at my next visit if I rem. My guess wld be after your new cells engraft and start prod new blood cells. But I'm just guessing.
