Sports and exercise

The AA&MDSIF has always advised patients that some form of regular exercise is important for their physical health and that they should discuss a daily exercise plan and sports participation with their doctor, adjusting their plan according to their blood counts.

The AA&MDSIF makes specific suggestions in their October 2009 eBulletin:
If you have a very low red blood cell count:
  • Avoid any activity that hurts your chest, makes it very hard to breathe, or makes your heart beat fast.
  • Don't go up too high in the mountains or in an airplane. High altitudes can cause a shortage of oxygen and chest pain.
If you have a very low platelet count:
  • Avoid any activities that could cause you to be bumped or bruised. You especially want to avoid hitting your head.
  • Ask your doctor about safe ways to stay active. Tell your doctor if you get a bad headache or bleed.
Other general recommendations:
  • Consider letting others know if you plan to go for a walk, run, or other exercise. And take a cell phone for emergencies.
  • Always consult with your treating physician before starting any kind of exercise program or engaging in sports activities.
As always, you and your doctor should work together toward your personal health goals.
