Mother Diagnosed with MDS RAEB 2

Hi,
My mother is diagnosed with MDS RAEB 2 recently. She is undergoing 2nd cycle of Decitibine Treatment. She is feeling fine now. Her blast count reduced to 6-8% from 16% after 1st Cycle of treatment. I would like to know what kind of vitamins and minerals can help/support the patients with MDS.

Thanks,
Rakesh.

Vitamins

Hi Rakesh,
Good that your mother seems to respond to Decitabine (Dacogen)!

We don't really know if there are any vitamins/minerals that can support patients with MDS. I have been taking B6, B12 and folic acid (1 mg) together with multivitamins without iron since dx 2006. The bone marrow needs these vitamins to be able to make blood. Too much folic acid can cause cancer.

Since I have received iron chelating drugs (drugs that decreases iron overload) many years because of high iron after many blood txs I take a little copper one month then zinc one month and then magnesium one month. I think iron chelating drugs can decrease other metals too.

I have read and heard (in videos from conferences) several dietists tell us that patients with all kind of diseases like leukemia should drink 2 liters extra every day and I have done that since dx.
Kind regards
Birgitta-A
