Breast Cancer and MDS

Has anyone on the board had cancer AFTER an MDS diagnosis?

Just when you think it can't get any worse, my mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. She is still in the testing stages so I have no idea at this point how bad it is. Her MDS came (I believe) after her treatment from Lymphoma 5 years ago. At this point they have haulted begining the Vidaza so her counts are very instabile. The breast surgeon is only going to do a single masectomy because her platelets and other counts are so low, he feels that is risky enough. I can't help but feel while you are there, just do the job right.

I just want to know can you be treated for 2 serious illnesses at the same time? Has anyone had experience with this before?

my mom just started Vidaza this week because her counts are so unstabile. Anyone know how Vidaza effects the treatment of cancer? We see the doctors on Thursday and hopefully will have more information.

Vidaza and cancer

Hi Suzanne,
Vidaza (azacytidine) in combination with other drug is in clinical trials for many types of cancer for example breast cancer, cancer in lungs and kidneys. Vidaza may have a positive effect.

Birgitta,
Thank you for your reply. That is very promising news. I was searching online and was unable to find anything about cancer AFTER an MDS diagnosis, only before.

Breast Cancer and MDS

Suzanne, if you have any update about the treatment for MDS and breast cancer concurrently. My wife has MDS, was just starting Vidaza, and will receive biopsy results tomorrow, but doctor is sure it is breast cancer. We are asking the same thing you asked in 2008, now can they treat both together?

I know I am very late answering this question and I am really not around much anymore, but I wanted to share my mother's experience.

Her breast surgeon was totally blown away by the effects Vidaza had on her breast cancer. He actually told my mother to tell her oncologist not to stop what he was doing because the tumor had disappeared.
