Chelation for iron overload.

Hi all,
Have been on this chelation pump for about 6 weeks Iron has gone from 4800to 3200. Had blood transfusion last friday and feel worn out and no energy, surely the RBC wouldnt drop so soon. I am so sick of this illness, I never have a good day anymore. Bless all of you.

hello,

what kind of mds do you have? you have a high ferritin's level and i'm not sure that is from transfusions only... If I'm well remember you're been on tranfusion since june?
For energy, you can try coenzyme Q10 on the form ubiquinol (not ubiquinone)...
How high are your counts?

take care béné

Iron chelation

Hi Delwyn,
Too bad that you feel tired though the HGB is quite high! You have responded very well to Desferal. Often the transfusion intevals will be longer when you start iron chelation - the bone marrow doesn't like too much iron just like the liver, heart and so on.
Kind regards

Thanks for your reply, I have Myelodysplastic Syndrome. I have Transfusions every 12 to 14 days. My red cell count goes down to 7.4, 8.1, then I have the transfusion. Im not sure what this is (coenzyme Q10 on the form ubiquinol) I am in New Zealand and havent heard of this before.
Regards Delwyn

hello,

Q10 is an complentary food... it has antioxydant action and for my boyfriend that help to fight the tiredness.. patient with cancer in general have a low Q10 rate... and the oncologist said us to try this medication... that give some results.

Q10 ubiquinol is more active that uniquinon form.

Low HGB

Hi Delwyn,
No wonder if you feel tired with such a low HGB as 7.4 or 8.1. Many patients need 10.0 and should be transfused so high that they have a good quality of life. In up to date clinics they have no rules for transfusions but ask the patients how they feel.

When I was transfusion dependent I discussed transfusions with the nurses - I felt OK when the HGB was above 8.0 but we are all different.
Kind regards
Birgitta-A
