When MDS patients 60 to 70 should have transplants

A study in 2009 of MDS transplant patients over 50 found that the most important factor influencing the outcome was the state of the disease, not the recipient's age or the intensity of the transplant conditioning.

A new study of MDS patients ages 60 to 70 had a similar conclusion. The researchers found that for de novo patients (e.g., where MDS is not secondary to another cancer), non-transplant care produces better outcomes than transplants for patients with an IPSS classification of Low-Risk or Intermediate-1, while reduced intensity transplants produce better outcomes than non-transplant care for patients with an IPSS classification of Intermediate-2 or High-Risk.

This study did not look at other age groups, secondary MDS, or full-intensity transplants.

There's more about the study in this news article.
