Healthy gut and GVHD article

In a new study, published in Nature Immunology, researchers searched for alterations in the gut microbiome to see whether their metabolites could impact outcomes after BMT.

"Our findings suggest we can prevent graft vs. host disease by bolstering the amount of the microbiome-derived metabolite butyrate," says study lead author Pavan Reddy, M.D., the Moshe Talpaz Professor of Translational Pathology and interim division chief of hematology/oncology at the University of Michigan.

I discussed this with my doctor before I had my stem cell transplant. It was an interesting discussion. A person has several types of bacteria in their stomach/digestive system. It just depends on which types of bacteria a person has that can determine how a person reacts to the side effects from the transplant and the weakened immune system. She said there was little that could be done because they didn't have the expertise to change that bacteria for each individual.

Old thread

Dan,

Here's an old thread, somewhat related, that you may find interesting. It talks about potato starch, which was mentioned in the study to increase butyrate levels.
