Some insurances will not pay for the HLA testing on potential donors.
The initial screening is free but the actual drilling down to see how good the match is might not be and its around 3-4k per potential donor.. The way it works at Weil-Cornell is if your monthly income is less than your monthly expenses including car payments, mortgage, food, etc. then you apply for a grant. The funds for the grant comes from donations people make to the hospital,. i.e. charity.
