[Marrowforums]

The Marrowforums software upgrade is complete. Most changes were made while the forum system remained available to members. The total "downtime" for members was less than an hour.

Many of the software improvements affect performance and security (benefits you can't see at a glance) but you may spot a few new features that are more apparent.

Among the new features:

• Quick search: The Search drop-down on the toolbar at the top of the page lets you specify either Show Threads or Show Posts. (This has always been an option on the full Search page.)
  
  If you select Show Threads, you'll see a list of threads that have one or more posts containing your search term.
  
  If you select Show Posts, you'll see a list of individual posts containing your search term.

  

• Easy unsubscribe: When you receive email about new threads or posts (see Forum and Thread Subscriptions), a link at the bottom of the message will let you unsubscribe from that forum or thread without logging into Marrowforums.
  
  The message will look something like this:

  To unsubscribe from the "Drug Treatments" forum, click here:
  http://forums.marrowforums.org/subscription.php?...auth=abcde12345

• Quote links: When a post quotes a previous post, a link to the previous post now appears after the Originally Posted by text. Click the icon to go to the post being quoted.
  
  For a good example of quote links, look at posts #8 and #12 in the New to This Forum thread. You can also see quote links in the Your comments are welcome thread.
  
  
• Multi-quoting: New multi-quote icons appear next to forum posts. You can use them when you want to make comments about a number of previous posts, quoting all of them in a single reply. This can be much easier than replying to one post, going back and replying to a second post, going back and replying to a third post, etc.
  
  The Quote button next to a post still lets you reply to a single post (the most common case).
  
  How to use the multi-quote feature:
  
  
  1. Click the multi-quote icon next to each post that you want to reply to. It will change color to show that it is selected.
     
     
  2. Click the Post Reply button. All of the quotes will appear in the text box where you type your post.
     
     
  3. Insert your comments in the text.
     
     
  4. Click the Submit Reply button.
  
  
• Private Message preview: If you receive a Private Message from another member, and you have checked Receive Email Notification of New Private Messages in your User Options, the email you receive will now include the text of the Private Message. As before, the message contains a link to the Marrowforums page where you can see and reply to the message.
  
  
• Private Message quota messages: Each member has been given space for up to 50 Private Messages. If you use up 45 of your quota of 50, you will be sent email warning you that you may soon run out.
  
  You can review, read, and/or delete messages on your Private Message page. If you want to save your previous messages, on your own computer, before deleting them from Marrowforums, use the Download all Private Messages as Text option on the bottom right side of the Private Messages page.
  
  
• More sort options: When viewing a forum display (example: the MDS forum page), the Display Options section at the bottom of the page now lets you sort by Thread Start Time, ascending or descending, to see threads in the order in which they were created. The default display remains sorted by Last Post Time.
