I think one of the most important factors is the ever-increasing knowledge about preventing side effects like infections, and treating them when they occur. In other words, when a life-threatening illness requires risky treatment, the key is to reduce the risk of the treatment.

Increased knowledge also lets physicians be smarter about knowing who is a good transplant candidate and who is not.
