I have a question

My Dad has been really bad the last few weeks. Blood levels in the low 6's to low 5's with 2 of the last weeks needing 3 units of blood each plus platelets. So he goes back yesterday and his hemo was 8.2 and plts 25k. He was feeling good and actually ate 2 full meals yesterday. What a shock that was for us! Well today he is back to being very weak. He is suppose to go back on Friday to get blood again. Have any of you experienced this before?

A lot of patients feel like they are on a roller coaster from one blood test to the next, watching their counts go up and down. Sometimes counts are up because a previous transfusion is holding and sometimes they are down because the transfusion has been used up. Counts can also be affected when he's dehydrated, so any one blood test doesn't give the big picture. Sometimes you just can't tell why counts ended up at a certain level, so you just have to take comfort when they are up. Appreciate the good days when he feels less fatigued, no matter what the counts are.
