A government study reported that sodium benzoate was present in soft drinks but in such a small quantity that it wasn't a threat to our health. Still, some companies have removed sodium benzoate from their products because it can cause concern among consumers. For example, nobody would call Diet Coke a health food but it no longer contains sodium benzoate.
