Low platelets, often a symptom of MDS, can cause bleeding of the gums.

A low white cell count, often a symptom of MDS, can cause susceptibility to oral and dental infections.

In either of these conditions, care should be taken during routine cleanings as well as other dental procedures. In some cases dental surgery should be avoided or postponed for MDS patients.

Dental problems can also be caused by chemical deficiencies sometimes associated with MDS and by side effects of treatment for MDS.

MDS patients should make sure that their dentist knows about their health status. It's helpful if the dentist and the hematologist are in communication with each other.

Do you have a specific concern, lfeinsmith?

Les, I had a thorough cleaning and two fillings redone before I went in for my induction chemo. While I was neutropenic, two other teeth absessed and I had to have them removed while in the hospital. I also have gum disease so none of my teeth were in real good shape to begin with. I am now several months after transplant and plan to have them all pulled in August and do the denture thing. It was not fun to have that happen while I was in the hospital so it is very important to prevent it if at all possible. Good Luck. Lori
