Smoking after transplant
When I was in the waiting area of my transplant Dr. last week I overheard 2 patients talking. One man said it had been 18 months since transplant and he had quit smoking for over a year but had started smoking again last month. He said all of his blood counts were good & no pill could relax him like a smoke could. He said he wasn't going to tell his Dr. I thought this was terrible after what he had gone through to take a chance of another cancer. Wouldn't the Dr.be able to tell that he was smoking ?

It is interesting. A lady next to me at our local cancer center needed to take a break during her treatments to go outside to "have a smoke". I could hardly believe what I was hearing.

age 70, dx RAEB-2 on 11-26-2013 w/11% blasts. 8 cycles Vidaza 3w/Revlimid. SCT 8/15/2014, relapsed@Day+210 (AML). Now(SCT-Day+1005). Prepping w/ 10 days Dacogen for DLI on 6/9/2017.

People do dumb things...
One guy, first day out of the hospital (at Hope Lodge) from his transplant (D+17ish) was eating NYC deli food from a buffet!!! I said: "you know you shouldn't be eating stuff like that" He said: "I was careful, and microwaved it on high for two minutes..." Everyone has their own level of comfort I guess... Just seems reckless maybe in someway... And I still see him at Dr. visits so I guess he survived...

My husband has quit smoking since transplant and that has been amazing bc he used to smoke 2 packs a day!! He said he just didn't feel like it after everything and eventually I guess his cravings went away...
Although he has been drinking beer frequently lately.. Makes me nervous ...not sure what to think about this I never see any thing about alcohol after transplant on these boards.. I'll start a thread

Re the alcohol discussion, there's no way I would touch it! See the affects on bone marrow on http://www.intelihealth.com/article/...toxic-or-tonic - it contributes to anaemia and low platelets. Alcohol also affects the liver. Any benefits from red wine can be gained by drinking grape juice which is delicious.

Dx MDS RAEB 10% blasts + hypogammaglobulinemia, Sep 2011. Jan 2012 BMB - blasts down to 2% w/out treatment so BMT cancelled. Re-diagnosis RCMD. Watch and wait from Feb 2012. IVIg 5-weekly. New diagnosis Oct 2019 AML 23% blasts in marrow, 10% blasts in peripheral blood.
