Pain Medication
From time to time, I need some pain medication for headache, back pain, etc.
I have very low counts in all three lines. Therefore, I cannot take aspirin, Motrin, Advil. I am allergic to anything with Codeine in it or any derivitive thereof. I can't take Tramadol: makes me sick. The doctor has told me to take nothin but Tylenol or some other product with Acetaminophen. However, I recently read on a site that lists medications that negatively affect platelets - that Tylenol also has a negative effect on platelet production. What is left? Does anyone out there have another medication they use for moderate pain? Age 69 with MDS for 5 1/2 years. Refractory Anemia, Multilinea, Blasts < 5%, No Chromosome Involvement. Platelets in 20s or below. White Count 1.1-1.5. Transfusion Dependent. |

I take Tylenol, the only one my doc will advise. I have had no problem with platelet count.

Tylenol
Hi Margie,
It is really very difficult to take drugs for pain if you will be sure to avoid all kinds of hematological advere reactions. I have looked at 17 drugs for mild to moderate pain but they all could affect the blood in a negative way. Here are the adverse effects of Tylenol according to one site: anemia, hemolysis, leukopenia, neutropenia and thrombocytopenia. http://migraineawarenessgroup.com/tr...t/protylnl.htm If you have used Tylenol without negative effects you probably could continue to use it. Kind regards Birgitta-A |
