Question Aplastic Anemia Patient Diagnosed last June 2015

Hi, this is Cris a cousin of a 10yrs od kid currently confined in Koronodal Provincial Hospital w/ Aplastic Anemia diagnosed just a month ago. She was confined twice w/in this month. The first confinement was when she suffered bleeding in her nose and luckily been discharged after a week. After a week of staying at home, She again been confined due to hard stomach ache. Knowing that a symptom of this illness was a horrible bleeding, are we to worry of the hard ache she felt on her stomach??
Looking forward for your best answer, suggestions and advises. Thank you!

Cris L.,

Your cousin has low platelets from aplastic anemia, and that explains her nose bleed. Excessive bruising is another common symptom of low platelets.

There are many possible explanations for your cousin's stomach ache, so the doctors will probably have to do tests to determine the cause. They may want to test her for paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), which is often associated with aplastic anemia. PNH causes loss of red blood cells (anemia) and a strong stomach ache is a common symptom.

Other conditions can cause a strong stomach ache, including constipation, gas pains, an intestinal problem, or diseases like myelofibrosis or ulcerative colitis. Some are easy to treat and some are harder. It may or may not be related to her aplastic anemia.

What kind of treatment did she receive during her first hospital confinement? The stomach ache may be a reaction to medicine that they gave her.

You can use the Mayo Clinic's children's abdominal pain symptom checker to look for other possible explanations.
