My dad possibly has MDS

Hi everyone I'm Rachel. My dad went to the emergency room last Friday thinking he was having a heart attack. It turned out it was a blood clot in his heart. If that wasn't scary enough the blood tests told us he was very anemic, his hemoglobin was 8 I believe. He recieved two pints of blood. Yesterday they told us they suspect he had MDS. Probably from prostate cancer radiation years ago. He needs much more testing and we have no idea what type he may have. I was wondering if MDS could have in anyway caused his blood clot? Could they be related at all? I know I should stay away from google, at first I was encouraged with the news that a bone marrow transplant could be a possible cure. He is 59 and in otherwise great health. The fact that he has the blood clot concerns me though, I'm sure he couldn't have a transplant if he is on blood thinners and maybe he won't even need one yet. I'm sorry I know I am rambling. I know we need so much more information but the unknown is so scary as I know you all understand. Best wishes to all of you, thank you for listening and I'd appreciate any info you can give.

Rachel

I am sorry to hear this. The only sure way to confirm mds is a bone marrow biopsy. I don't think I have heard others here speak of blood clots due to mds but his dr can answer all those questions for you. Make sure you see someone that is a specialist in mds. Please keep us posted here.

Rachel,

I am sorry for your situation. This is a good place for concerns. I went to the hospital for kidney stones and after the blood test I was surprised just like you and your Dad. You will soon find out that you have entered a numbers game. The did a CBC (complete blood count) for your Dad. That will be information for you to use as a baseline measurement. You might have earlier CBCs that you can reference. Keep them organized and perhaps mention the findings here for everyone to check with any responses.

Wish you the best.
