High MPV count low platelets
Hi everyone.
My last blood count has showed a slightly high MPV count (11.6) but a lowish platelet count (114). Can anyone explain what a high MPV count combined with a low platelet count could mean? Thanks very much, Carolyn |

Slightly high Mean Platelet Volume
Hi Carolyn,
As far as I understand older platelets are a little larger than younger platelets - high MPV perhaps indicates that your platelets live long which is a good sign. Your platelet count is very good for a MDS patient - my latest platelet count was 33 after treatment with Exjade that my red blood cells liked but my white blood cells and platelets disliked. http://www.brighthub.com/science/med...les/24390.aspx Kind regards Birgitta-A |

It means the platelets are bigger than normal. They don't fragment properly. But the good news is that you've got plenty of platelets. My MPV hangs out between 13-15.5. Has been this way for years. Might want to get B12 looked at. Really improved my counts. Went from 50-80k now low normal 130-155.
Best wishes This is a great breakdown. http://www.metromedlab.com/SiteConte...0%20101609.pdf |
