Thumbs up More stemcells from umbilical-cord blood

Hi all members thinking of SCT,
The reseacher at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center have found a successful laboratory method for expanding the number of stem/progenitor cells from a single unit of cord blood resulted in an average 164-fold increase in the number of CD34+ cells, a type of hematopoietic stem cell.

Ooh thanks for posting the scientific study! BBC News had this as their top Health story on Monday, and I posted it a couple threads down as it's such great news! Imagine not only having no donor-related delays, but also no GvH!

GVHD

Hi squirrellypoo,
Since the threads sometimes change so fast I didn't see your post about umbilical cord blood but now I have read it. Good that the study is considered to be "great news"!

You know patients that get umbilical cord blood still can get GVHD. In this study the cumulative incidence at day 100 of grade II–IV acute GVHD for the entire population was 29±3%. The 2-year cumulative incidence of chronic GVHD was 19%.
