Gene Responsible For 5q discovered

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases...0117174244.htm

I have been hearing of this, but many of the articles are too technical for me (I have tried racking my brain to recall college biology to recall the role of the ribosomes and all I remember is they have to do with energy), but this article was simple enough for me to gain some understanding. It is exciting news.

There is an excellent article on the 5q- syndrome in the July 2008 issue of Haematologica:
Myelodysplastic syndrome with isolated 5q deletion (5q- syndrome). A clonal stem cell disorder characterized by defective ribosome biogenesis
It describes the syndrome, its history, its relationship to MDS classifications, a case history, lenalidomide treatment and its regulatory status, and research in progress.

The article is technical, but probably understandable for patients who have learned some of the medical terms associated with bone marrow failure.

Neil,

Thanks for sharing. I have read it, but now that I found that other one, I think I will re-read it.
