I broke my own 10km record!
Various homelife things meant I didn't quite have the same hoopla lead-up to my annual 10km running race this year, and considering I now regularly bang out 18km on the weekend without much effort, I wasn't terribly concerned about finishing the race like I had in past years.
This year it was all about breaking my PB (Personal Best), which I logged in 2008, several months before my MDS and a full year before my transplant. And after coming within 7 seconds of it last year, I was out for blood!* But we've been having a heatwave in the UK, and on Sunday it hit 28C (83F) with blazing sunshine, and there were lots of runners dropping out from heat exhaustion along the course. I ran it with a friend who's at the same pace as me, and we locked into our 5min/km pace throughout, only leaving him at the 9km point to ramp up the speed and then sprint the final 200m!  By my watch, I finished in 49:45, but the official chip time says I completed it in 50:27! So not the sub-50 I thought I'd done, but still a new PB, and importantly, I've finally broken the record "old Melissa" had set before all this transplant stuff got in the way of life. And that feels great. Did I mention I've signed up to run my first full marathon in Amsterdam in October? Oh dear... * No, really! I'm again raising funds for Anthony Nolan, the UK's bone marrow registry charity.

36/F - 1984 SAA treated with ATG [complete remission until] Oct 08 - burst blood vessels in eyes and low platelets; Jan 09 - AA & hypo-MDS; July 09 - BMT (RIC MUD PSCT) July 10 - 10k for Anthony Nolan (1yr post BMT! 53:48) Sep 10 - Wedding!  I've run 5 marathons now!! (PB 3:30!)

Congrats!!!!! I cannot even begin to entertain running a marathon under the best of health and conditions...not even when in my 20's.

Congratulations! You have been such an inspiration to me. Hopefully next year I will be back yacht racing.

Catherine, wife of Bruce age 75; diagnosed 6/10/11 with macrocytic anemia, neutropenia and mild thrombocytopenia; BMB suggesting emerging MDS. Copper deficient. Currently receiving procrit and neuopogen injections weekly, B12 dermal cream and injections, Transfusions ~ 5 weeks.
