Drugs for depression
Hi All,
As MDS Beacon reported there is a study at ASH showing positive results for treatment with so called SSRI drugs for depression in MDS patients. SSRI treatment promotes normalization of deranged proinflammatory cytokines in patients diagnosed with depression such as TNF α and IL12. https://ash.confex.com/ash/2012/webp...aper54539.html Kind regards Birgitta-A |

Hubby had just started on one of the SSRIs for depression . . . 3-4 weeks ago . . . and started running high temperatures around the same time. Infectious diseases thinks it could be this med, so we have stopped it for now. There's other "stuff" going on, so it could easily be something else causing the fever . . . here we go again. Everything is just so interrelated and it's hard to tell where the symptoms are coming from. Argh!

As always, what works for one patient may not help another. When I was finally diagnosed five years ago, my GP put me on 10mg daily Citalopram Hydrobromide and that works for me.
Not sure if it falls under the SSRI category.

Yep, citalopram is one of the SSRIs and is the one my hubby was on. The high fevers and sweats have gradually gone away since quitting it. Oh, well.

SSRI
Hi Brenda,
As far as I understand nobody has performed a trial with some SSRI drug for MDS. In the study from ASH they have retrospectively looked at patients treated with SSRI for depression and compared them with patients that not have been treated with SSRI. Then they found that patients treated with SSRI had a better over all survival. Thalidomide - that I take - is supposed to decrease TNF α. Kind regards Birgitta-A |

I take citalopram. I began at 40 mg and have reduced to 30 mg now. Upon receipt of my diagnosis, I was on Lorazepam and Klonopin. My daughter was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer one month after I received my sct, at which time they changed my meds to citalopram and klonopin and Elavil to help with sleep. I would encourage any of you to see the psychiatrist and do what they recommend. I am weaning down slowly and see my psych every 2 months. If my daughter wasn't going through her battle, I believe I would be able to reduce my citalopram and klonopin to lower levels. Good luck to you. Blessings, Lori
