maybe jumping the gun

Ill start with my wife has stage 4 breast cancer..we were in a trial and were kicked out because of blood counts ( wbc 1.6 / rbc 3.2 / platlet 41% ) they have been this way for about 6 weeks onc called us in and said it looks like she has leukemia because she has blasts 8% our marrow biopsy hasent returned yet she says we can do chemo for breast but not sure of chemo for marrow yet because chemo may have caused leukemia so we have to get with the marrow doctor every thing i read about seems to point to MDS does anyone know what i should exspect or what questions i should ask the doc...i try not to goggle stuff because it is confusing and you read stuff you dont like to hear.....i just want to be better informed

First of all, I'm so sorry about your wife's cancer, that she was kicked out of the trial and now you're facing this uncertainty about what else is going on.

If, after the bone marrow biopsy results come back and there is a diagnosis of MDS, you will want to know what is the classification/subtype -- that will drive the treatment options offered by your wife's doctors.

Here is a list of other questions you might consider

I hope you get the bone marrow results back soon. The waiting is awful.

billyb,

You can get trustworthy information from the Aplastic Anemia & MDS International Foundation. Start here. You can get printed material from their free information package or watch the introductory presentations in their Online Learning Center.

It's not the news you hoped for, but AML is like MDS -- there are different subtypes with different prognoses. The chromosome report will let the doctors figure out what subtype they're dealing with. While I know little about AML, I do know that with MDS one of the most important things for a good outcome is to find a specialist. I expect the same is true for AML. I am praying for your wife and also pray that you find good doctors to help you through your journey.

My daughter (age 28) has stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. She underwent the chemo and radiation last year and taked herceptin and tamoxefin. Lately she has had bruising and I am concerned that she may have leukemia or something in that arena. Keep us informed and I will put you and your wife in my prayers.
