NPlate for Aplastic Anemia?

Dad's hemotologist has recommended trying NPlate to see if it will help boost his platelets. Dad has not required any platelet transfusions in the last 5 months, but his platelets hover between 16 and 28. (He got 2 platelet transfusions in order to have some skin cancer spots removed, but has not needed them otherwise.) His HGB is also not dropping as rapidly, and he has only had 2 blood transfusions since October 09! We are so thankful, as he did not respond well to Exjade and his ferretin level was getting very high.
Anyway, I wonder if it would be worth taking a chance trying the NPlate to see if it might help boost his platelets? Are we playing with fire, since his blood levels, although low, have been relatively stable lately? Making these decisions is so gut wrenching! Any input would be deeply appreciated.

Deb, daughter of Paul, 77, diagnosed SAA 8/07, 2 ATG treatments and he is considered non-responsive, cyclosporine 200 mg daily, today's HGB 8.4, platelets 16. Dad's birthday is tomorrow and he says he doesn't want a thing - he is blessed with all he needs---his family!
