Resources for Australians

The Leukaemia Foundation of Australia offers information, support, and practical assistance to patients with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma, and related blood disorders. We recommend that you download their MDS Booklet (PDF, 1.8MB) and other educational materials. They host online discussions in an MDS section of Talk Blood Cancer.

The PNH Support Association of Australia (PNHSAA) offers news to the approximately 70 PNH patients in Australia. In support of these patients they are petitioning the Australian Government to provide funding for eculizumab (trade name Soliris), already approved in many other countries for the treatment of PNH.

Feel free to share information about other resources for Australians with aplastic anaemia, MDS, or PNH.

Australian Centre for Blood Disease

Where is a local centre to look for help if you are in Australia and have been diagnosed with a blood disorder such as aplastic anemia, blood cancers etc?

Here is some information about the first point of contact and subsequent treatment : The ACBD.

The Australian Centre for Blood Diseases is located in Boxhill Hospital, Melbourne.

It aims to provide excellence in the diagnosis and treatment of blood conditions as well as play a leading role in the advancement of knowledge in this increasingly important area of Medicine esp Blood diseases.

Details about malignant haematology research at the centre:

Details about Clinical Haematology:

Download of latest 48 page annual research report here:

Prof Dr Salem and Assoc Prof Dr Swarer ( BMT coordinator ) were the doctors treating the aplastic anemia cases ( they are still there from the staff list ). Dr Tom John the haematology Registrar way back in 2002 has since transferred elsewhere. The haematology unit is a really busy unit but most of the unit nurses were knowledgeable, and very helpful. They were the ones who gave me a bundle of information leaflets that "educated" me largely on aplastic anemia that I found to be very useful, accurate and comprehensive.
